The effects of infertility

One of the most frequently expressed frustrations about fertility is the feeling of not being in control of the situation. This may be the first time an individual has to come to terms with not being able to make something happen exactly how and when they want it. There may be feelings that their body has let them down resulting in a loss of self-confidence and self worth.  Problems with conceiving can result in a reduced sense of well-being. It may produce feelings of stress and anxiety, jealousy “why is she pregnant and not me”, anger, guilt “I’m letting my partner down”, hopelessness “it’s never going to happen”, or depression.

Frequently, couples feel they can’t discuss their fertility issues with friends and families which amplifies the effect of the negative emotions. As these feelings take over, behaviour may start to change. This may start to negatively impact on all areas of your life including the couple’s relationship and also interactions with friends and family and colleagues at work. Couples may not feel like going out and socialising so becoming more isolated and inward focussed consequently adding more pressure to an already stress-filled situation.

I use coaching with a Cognitive Behavioural Therapy approach because it helps couples to have a more positive attitude and there is now evidence it can help them to conceive.  A study at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia found that CBT can aid fertility by reducing anxiety.
